Alex Bogomolov stuns Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach the third round – Western & Southern Open 2011
A huge upset for the tennis fans all over the globe, as the world number 10, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, got crushed by the 50th ranked American qualifier, Alex Bogomolov, in the second round of Western and Southern Financial Group Masters, on Wednesday.
The contest was held on the outdoor hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, near Cincinnati, United States, with the 15th seeded French crashing out of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event. Bogomolov took merely one hour and twelve minutes of play to dispose of the world number 10 comprehensively in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the round of 16 of Cincinnati Masters.
Tsonga was the semi-finalist at Wimbledon Championships earlier this season and has registered two straight victories against Roger Federer in one month’s time but failed to put up any serious resistance in the Wednesday’s contest. The Frenchman got his arm injured in the semi-final clash against the world number one, Novak Djokovic, at Montreal Masters last week and perhaps the injury-stricken arm was the only reason for Tsonga to put up such an ordinary performance against a 50th ranked player.
“I didn’t play the last two days because of my arm, and this morning at the warm-up I was feeling really good. It was a really fluid match. Everything was easy for me today, including my serve,” said Tsonga after winning his opening round match against Croatia’s number one, Marin Cilic. The French depicted clear signs of fatigue in the second set of the match and eventually surrendered the contest to the hard hitting Bogomolov.
The American got in the lime light this year when he made a huge upset at Miami Masters by defeating the world number four, Andy Murray of Great Britain and has earned a place in the third round of Cincinnati Masters after outplaying 15th seed Tsonga.
“I learned a lot about myself during that match just because it was a lot of pressure. It was my hometown. It was on the stadium where I grew up in Miami,” said Bogomolov. “Now it’s a little bit different. It’s a third round of a Masters Series instead of a second round but we’re going to have the same game plan going in.”
Bogomolov will take on Murray once again in the third round of Cincinnati Masters in his next clash for a place in the quarter-finals. Murray was successful against the former world number three, David Nalbandian of Argentina, in the second round.
