Alex Bogomolov takes down Robby Ginepri in first round – Western & Southern Open 2011
Rated at number 50 in the world rankings, Alex Bogomolov of the United States, outplayed his fellow compatriot, Robby Ginepri, in the opening round of Western and Southern Financial Group Masters on Monday afternoon.
The all-American affair was held on the outdoor hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, near Cincinnati, United States, with Bogomolov wining in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to make it into the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event. Ginepri proved a total mismatch for the belligerent Bogomolov, who cashed in most of his opportunities to come out as the winner in the end.
Being the wildcard in the tournament, Ginepri failed to come up to the expectations of the local crowd and frittered away plenty of chances in the game to finish on the losing end. The American had 11 break opportunities in the contest and he cashed in just one out of them, while suffering three out of three serve breaks from Bogomolov.
A total of 125 points were played in the matchup, with Bogomolov winning 69 and his opponent securing 56 points. The American qualifier used his powerful forehand to perfection and belted a number of assertive winners down the line to take the better of Ginepri. Bogomolov gave away limited unforced errors in the matchup and fully capitalized upon the mistakes of his bleak opponent to conclude victory.
Ginepri was off to a flyer in the opening set, breaking his opponent in the very first game of the contest to lead 2-0. He secured seven out of 11 first serve points in the opener, while Bogomolov excelled over him with 19 out of 27 points. The American qualifier backfired at his opponent in the sixth game to level the scores at 3-3 and then carried on with his momentum to nail his second serve break to close out the opening set at 6-4.
The following set took off with a steady start, with both players failing to crack in a serve break in the opening seven games. Bogomolov stung a very timely serve break in the next game to drive Ginepri out of the contest, finishing off the contest at 6-3 to move into the second round of Cincinnati Masters.
Bogomolov will take on the winner of the contest between the 15th seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Croatia’s number one, Marin Cilic, in the second round of the tournament.
