Alex Borg dominates Sam Harvey in dramatic final frame – 2011 World Snooker Q School, Event 3
Malta’s professional Alex Borg has defeated Sam Harvey by a frame score of 4-3 in the best-of-seven frames Round 1 match of the Event 3 of this season’s World Snooker Q School, which is being held at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield.
It was a cutthroat competition between both players, which ended up pretty dramatically on the final black ball. However, Borg who suffered opening round defeats in the previous rounds was the lucky one to come on the top in the battle of nerves.
It was a very well fought battle and the overall score-line between both players was 77-26 (Harvey 60), 25-75 (Borg 40), 78-0 (Harvey 73), 34-70, 39-78, 61-0 and 55-58 (Borg 49).
First chance in the opening frame fell for Borg but he could only manage 26 points whereas Harvey responded with a classy break of 60 to draw the first blood 1-0. However, it was an exact opposite story in the following, as the first chance in it fell for
Harvey but he broke down on 25 and when the chance presented itself, Borg levelled the things by 1-1 with a modest break of 40.
The third frame was over within a blink of an eye, as the Englishman Harvey gave no chance to his opponent and restored his one frame lead at 2-1 with a superb break of 73.
The following fourth and fifth frames were cagey, as many chances were squandered by both players with balls all over the table. However, in both frames it was the Malta cueist who appeared on top to turn his one-frame deficit into a one-frame advantage
at 2-3.
Harvey, who was left down by one frame with two to play, also bounced back in the sixth frame and forced the deciding frame.
The decider was pretty dramatic. Borg was the first one to be on the run in it and he was on the verge of victory before he lost his nerves, breaking down on 49. Harvey afterwards showed great temperament but the snooker did not come for him, as he missed
the final black ball. Borg quickly stepped in and finished the matters off.
Alex Borg will now face Rob James in the next round.
