Alex Carrigan leads Canadian Men's Amateur Championship
Alex Carrigan shot a six-under par 66 on Tuesday to take a one-stroke lead over Brian Churchill-Smith in the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship at the Camelot Golf and Country Club.
Carrigan started off on the back nine of the course and birdied three of the first four holes that he played. Another two birdies on the 15th and 17th hole took him in the lead, early in the round.
“I couldn’t ask for a better start,” Carrigan said. “I started three under through four holes, which threw me for a loop, starting that good”.
He could have taken the advantage of his opening nine to extend the lead to a greater margin. However, his putting on the front nine was not as impressive as it was at the early stage of the round. He settled for two birdies against a lone bogey on the front
nine.
Yet, he was happy with his overall performance during the round and told that the course played a vital role in his performance on day one.
According to him, putting was quite easy and the greens behaved really well throughout the day. Therefore, it was really easy to finish well if someone is good in long-game play.
“The greens were absolutely phenomenal. Speeds were just perfect,” Carrigan said. “I love the (Camelot) golf course. It’s a shot makers golf course. I love the fact that you’ve got to be aware of the elevation change, and it’s very similar to what I deal
with at the Cutten Club (in Guelph)”.
Smith also recorded the same number of birdies in his round. However, his meltdown on the eighth hole for a double bogey kept him one stroke shy from the lead.
Stephane Dubois and Jerry Christiansen tied for the third position after posting a four-under par 68 on the leaderboard.
Nathan Clark, who stood first in the qualifying round at Camelot on Saturday, recorded a three-under par 69 to take the share of the fifth position.
According to him, it was a matter of prestige to enter the Canadian championship. Therefore, he did his best to make it to the event and surge into contention right from the beginning of the tournament.
