Alex Corretja appointed as the new captain of Spain’s Davis Cup team – Tennis News
Dilemma of new Spanish Davis Cup team captain is finally resolved and Alex Corretja has been appointed as the new captain of the Spain’s Davis Cup team. Corretja was one of the former Roland Garros French Open finalists and has
performed duties at higher management levels as well. He will replace the successful three year tenure of Albert Costa, who helped Spain to win two titles in three years.
The new captain has a lot of things to look after right from the day of joining, as the Spanish team that is re-known for world class performances at the courts in Davis Cup ties is reshuffled with the announcements made by three
participants from world top ranks.
Corretja, former world number two, was excited to have been granted an opportunity to serve his nation. He proclaimed that his appointment is “honour and huge responsibility" and he looks forward to fulfil the task handed over
to him with utmost care and serenity.
Spanish number one, Rafael Nadal and world number five, David Ferrer, announced their non-participation in the Davis Cup ties in 2012. These announcements were soon followed by another team member Feliciano Lopez that opened up
three slots to be filled by youngsters.
It is a positive decision considering the fact that this will provide an opportunity to the upcoming stars that need some world class tournament to raise their standard of play. However, it will definitely decline the hopes of
Spanish crowd that were looking to witness their prolific performers back in action after completing a successful year with yet another Davis Cup glory.
Albert Costa remained captain for the past three years from 2009 to 2011 and helped Spain win two titles in his first and last year but looking at the squad he had, he was ought to win titles. It will not be the same for the newly
appointed captain because he has to rebuild the squad from the scratch and need to make bold yet tactical decisions about which player to choose for Spain’s 2012 Davis Cup campaign.
Corretja will feel a bit relieved after hearing the comments about the need based availability of Nadal and Ferrer from the president of Spanish Tennis Federation, José Luis Escañuela. President told the local media, “I'm sure
that as soon as they (Nadal and Ferrer) are required for the commitment they have with our country, who have always shown, and the final result of this victory in the Davis Cup, I am absolutely convinced that if Spain will need them to be next to Spain, our
country and do as they have done all weekend everywhere: to raise the Spanish flag and the anthem of Spain sound.”
This seems to be a wise appointment but results will show how far Corretja can go with a newly formed Spain’s Davis Cup team.
