Alex Davis: A fighter cannot excel in UFC without his manager – UFC news
According to Alex Davis, it is unfeasible for any fighter in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to play the role of a fighter and a manager at the same time, since the daily hectic schedule of a fighter needs a separate manager who can motivate him and
keep a check on him.
The managerial matter is currently a hot issue in the media because of several reasons most important being the let go by Jose Aldo and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua of their managers.
As soon as the above two impressive UFC brawlers said adios to their managers, questions poped up in minds of not only other fighters but also UFC fanatics, as to why a manager is needed and whether it’s necessary to get the help of a manager or promoter
or not.
Alex was of the view that if one is able enough to give time to all the managerial aspects such as deciding his own brawls, setting them up, talking to the management about its finalisation, the revenue, the venue and other such aspects along with his strenuous
four to eight hour training, then he can do so but he should keep this in mind that this scenario is close to impossible.
Alex said, “Although you might have cases where an individual fighter can manage his or her own career successfully, those will be few and far between. For the most part, both the fighter and the promotion need help.”
Davis remarked that there are only a few examples of such cases.
The former UFC veteran was of the view that in most cases it is only the arrogance of the naive and rookie incoming fighters who think that they can handle all facets the business, training and fighting ones whereas the fact is they get their careers killed
because of this three dimensional hectic routine.
Alex revealed “Let's go back to the point when a fighter starts his career and begins progressing up through the ranks. At that point, it will be very difficult for a guy to accomplish all of his goals without the guidance, contacts and experience of someone
who has been in the game for a while and understands the ins and outs of our specific world.”
Davis reiterated that the current scenario is the most favourable for the managers since they have got themselves a golden chance to prove their vitality not only at the moment when a newbie enters the octagon but also when he has a huge pile of advertisers
and sponsors hovering over his head at a later stage.
Alex commented that Jose’s and Rua’s adios to their managers must not be taken in the wrong way they might have some differences and the matter solely depends upon the parties mind set. Alex at the end of the interview said that people don’t know the basic
reason why managers exist and the importance of a promoter becomes clear only when they know the basic function of the managing companies.
