Alex Ferguson: Wayne Rooney incident proves Manchester United need experienced manager
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said that the recent events surrounding Wayne Rooney prove that the club will need to hire an experienced manager when he eventually retires.
Rooney had announced that he wanted to leave the club due to a perceived lack of ambition. But the England international swiftly backtracked, only to sign a new five-year deal with the English Premier League giants two days later.
In his 24 years in charge of the Red Devils, Ferguson has dealt with many players who have wanted to leave, urging some to stay and allowing others to move on.
As result, he has put his success at convincing Rooney to remain at Old Trafford down to experience, and claimed that whoever steps into his shoes must be a manager who has coached at a high level for several years.
Ferguson also told The Guardian that there were always issues to deal with and that the next boss had to be capable of deflecting negative media publicity from the players.
"I don't think Manchester United could ever go down the road of having a young manager, to be honest with you. It's a job that needs a lot of experience at the top end of the game. We have the benefit of my 24 years at the club, so fortunately that's the
way we could deal with it.
"At Manchester United, you can never be surprised. There is always something happening in the club and there are always issues to deal with. I don't think you can deny we got a lot of publicity that we didn't enjoy, but you have to deal with these situations
and I think we dealt with it very well.

"I've got the benefit of having been at the club for such a long time I have experienced a lot of things. It's big enough dealing with winning matches without the publicity attached that doesn't always put football in a good light."
