Alex Ferguson disappointed with Manchester City draw
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is unhappy that his side were only able to take away a point from their goalless English Premier League draw with Manchester City on Wednesday, 10 November.
The first Manchester derby of the season took place at the City of Manchester Stadium and despite a great deal of interest surrounding the fixture, it proved to be a tepid affair.
Both sides came close to scoring. City’s Carlos Tevez had a free-kick saved by Edwin van der Sar, and Joe Hart was able to keep out Dimitar Berbatov’s volley, but neither team showed enough industry to break the deadlock.
That left Ferguson frustrated as he saw his side fail to maintain pace with EPL leaders Chelsea, who moved four points clear of the Red Devils courtesy of their 1-0 win over Fulham.
The Scot claimed that City boss Roberto Mancini had set out his team in a defensive formation in order not to lose, rather than push forward and try to pick up the win.
He told reporters, "I am disappointed we didn't win, we needed to win. They set their stall out not to lose. They are very powerful and experienced and they stopped us from playing. Maybe all the tension in the build-up to the game was too much for it to be
a real spectacle.
"There were good aspects to our play. We controlled the game and there were good aspects to our play, but we didn't create many chances. We dominated and played some good football, but teams coming here are going to find it difficult."
Mancini, meanwhile, was pleased to pick up a point after City lost both of their EPL games against United last term.
"It was important for both clubs not to lose. I think this proves City are at the same level as United at the moment. We just need some more time. We are improving and I prefer one point to zero points, which was the case in this game last season."
