Alex Ferguson expects Wayne Rooney to excel against Rangers
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has today tipped Wayne Rooney to silence his detractors against Rangers Tuesday night with a strong performance as the sides clash in the UEFA Champions League.
The married striker has been subject to much attention in the media over the last week following claims that he solicited the services of prostitutes while his wife was pregnant.
Rooney started and scored the opening goal in England’s UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying match against Switzerland last Tuesday — two days after the reports were published.
However, Ferguson opted to leave Rooney out of the English Premier League game away to Everton, for fears that the player would be affected by an extremely hostile reception by the supporters at his former club.
'Looking forward to good performance'
Ferguson has revealed he is ready to pitch the 24-year-old back into the side that will take on the Scottish Premier League champions and is expecting Rooney to put in an impressive shift.
According to The Mirror, he said: "We're expecting a good performance from Wayne. We're all looking forward to that."
Ferguson added that he is hoping his side will avoid complacency and steer clear of a result like the one against Everton on Saturday, where the Toffees came back from 3-1 down to secure a point after two injury-time goals.
He said that: “There have been some lapses in concentration. The last few minutes at Everton on Saturday were crazy. We also had some fantastic chances to put the game to bed on Saturday. But that's indicative of this particular type of team.
“They play great football, they create great openings and opportunities, but they're a bit wasteful in their chances. That's been the case in all of our games this season and a few last year. It's the area in which you say what happened in the last couple of away games has to be a driver for the rest of the season.”
