Alex Ferguson says Manchester City need trophies to back up big talk
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says that Manchester City need trophies to back up their big talk.
Since City were taken over by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in September 2008, they have spent vast sums of money to bring in big-name players such as Robson de Souza (‘Robinho’), Yaya Toure,
Carlos Tevez — formerly a United player — and 2010 FIFA World cup winner David Silva.
However, City have yet to show any tangible evidence that such heavy investment is paying off, as they have not won a trophy since the League Cup in 1976.
Ahead of the sides’ English Premier League meeting at the City of Manchester Stadium on Wednesday, 10 November, Ferguson told The Mirror that City supporters want trophies to match the club’s ambition, but
warned that some were perhaps expecting too much.
"I think if you were to ask City’s supporters they’d prefer to see a trophy paraded through the city before they start getting carried away."
Ambitious tattoo
"There was one City fan who got a tattoo on his body saying ‘European Cup Winners!’ I mean, people get carried away. Unfortunately supporters are just as bad as directors."
"I just think a lot of their supporters would probably prefer to see a trophy before they start screaming from the rooftops."
Despite their failure to win a trophy since Sheikh Mansour's takeover, City have been tipped by many pundits to finish in the top four of the EPL and qualify for the next season’s UEFA Champions League.
A victory over United on Wednesday would see them move level with the Red Devils on points. However, Ferguson led his men to victory in both of the clubs’ EPL derbies last season, and also beat City in their
two-legged League Cup semi-final.
