Alex Gordon Looking for a long term deal with Kansas City Royals – MLB News
Kansas City Royals signed a one year contract with three pitchers and one outfielder on Wednesday to strengthen their throwing department. However, Alex Gordon wasn’t given a contract and he is still going through the arbitration process with the Royals. The outfielder has produced match winning performances since he joined the club.
Gordon’s agents told that both parties were looking to a sign a long term deal. The right handed striker displayed some high quality batting and fielding skills the past season. Although he has asked for $5.45 million in arbitration, the Royals are willing to pay him $4.15 million for the next season. Gordon will be looking to make the most of available opportunities by staying in the club where he always wanted to be.
“It’s very slow talks,” Gordon said. “I think no one is really in a rush to get something done, just because I still have two years left with the Royals.”
“I think both sides want to get something that’s equal,” Gordon said. “And hopefully, eventually, maybe we can get something done.”
The guy has an inspiring relationship with the general manager. He is also very happy with the coaching staff. In addition to his defensive skills, Gordon can perform decently with the bat as well. Showing his determination and composure, he batted with an average of .303 with 72 extra base hits and it will not be wrong to say that 2011 was the breakthrough season for him.
Royals’ management should realise that Major League Baseball is run by the players and if Gordon misses out on the opportunity to sign a long term deal– the ownership will be responsible for it.
The Royals have already saved millions of dollars with the lowest payroll in baseball last year. Major League Baseball is a big market and big money. The clubs are making millions of dollars every year with an enormous boost in attendance and television revenue. The Royals have hardly been in the top half of payrolls and they have criticised heavily for it. However, they have to be flexible in times to plan for the future.
