Alex Gordon homers as Detroit Tigers lose to Kansas City Royals 1-2 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were beaten by the Kansas City Royals 1-2 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday, August 30 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
With the win, Ned Yost and company also completed a deserving series sweep. Tigers took a heart breaking 9-8 loss in series opener and they struggled to score runs in Game 2 as well. Their poor offensive form continued in the finale as well as they failed
to score and get past Royals’ total.
Starting pitcher Rick Porcello had another difficult outing as he gave up two runs and eight hits in just five innings to take his 10th loss of the season. Relief pitchers Darin Downs and Brayan Villarreal combined to pitch two scoreless innings
but their effort did not prove to be enough. For the Royals, Alex Gordon showed great hitting skills as he belted a home-run in the sixth inning. Jhonny Peralta scored the only run of the game for Detroit Tigers.
"Spectacular pitching again by Jeremy Guthrie," Royals’ manager Ned Yost said of starting pitcher Guthrie who allowed just a run in seven plus innings. "Great defense, a huge double play to end the ballgame. We had a couple of opportunities to add on, but
two runs was enough."
"We scattered a lot of hits," Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said. "We couldn't get the big hit. We got hits to lead off innings and couldn't do anything with them. We got two-out hits and that ended it. We certainly had enough hits and we had a chance there
at the end."
Tigers entered the series as the favourites and they had an excellent chance to replace the American League Central Division leaders Chicago White Sox but the Royals had other ideas. It will be interesting to see if they can manage to come out of this slump
to have any chance of reaching the playoffs.
Surely, manager Jim Leyland will be expecting his team to regroup and fight back at this critical time of the season to cheer up the fans.
