Alex Gordon shines as Kansas City Royals defeat Oakland Athletics 11-6 – MLB Update
Alex Gordon put in a brilliant performance as the Kansas City Royals beat Oakland Athletics 11-6 in an intense encounter on Monday, September 5 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California.
The Kansas City Royals were locked with the Oakland Athletics on 6-6 in the ninth, as both teams were looking for an opportunity to set up a decider.
That instance came in the top ninth when Andrew Bailey took the mound for Oakland as he allowed Salvador Perez a single and ousted Alcides Escobar with a fly out, the hurler went face-to-face against Alex Gordon.
"With Bailey, to be honest with you, I was just trying to swing at the first pitch because I was having a rough day, swinging through a lot of pitches," Alex Gordon said.
The Kansas City hitter was not having the time of his life but things changed immediately as he smashed Bailey to the right with a line drive and ran a double. Chris Getz, who had replaced Perez, scored the seventh run. With the wheels set in motion, Melky
Cabrera drew in a RBI single and subsequently, Eric Hosmer led a RBI double.
The score climbed to 11-6 in favour of the Royals when Mike Moustakas drew in runs from Hosmer and Billy Butler.
The credit all went to Gordon who was trying to catch a break from a bad night. The left fielder was struck-out twice and popped out once, earlier. The strong man was trying his luck against Bailey and it fortunately paid off. The Kansas City star did have
words of encouragement for Bailey who gave up three runs in the inning before being replaced by Neil Wagner.
"He actually threw me a good pitch down-and-in and I somehow just barreled it, put it in play and something happened," Gordon said.
Gordon is currently on a batting average of .303 and he’s tied on the top posting with Melky Cabrera and Billy Butler. All three hitters have the same average. For Gordon, it was a night to remember. If the Royals keep their hits up, they can hope to finish
on third place in the American League Central.
