Alex Jensen named as the head coach of the NBA Development league team in Canton: NBA News
Former University of Utah standout Alex Jensen has been named as the new head coach of NBA Development League franchise in Canton. The D- League team is owned by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The official announcement in this regard came on Tuesday, October 11, making Jensen the first head coach of the side after the Cavs purchased it earlier in July. The General Manager of Canton Wes Wilcox made the announcement but did not disclose the terms and conditions of the contract.
Considering Alex’s experience and numerous achievements, Wilcox believes that Jensen is the perfect fit to give a head start to the D-league team.
"Alex is a great fit for our team and organization and what we want to develop and accomplish in Canton. He has a very successful and diverse background that is rooted in strong defensive principles and learned from one of the best coaches and basketball teachers in college basketball in Rick Majerus.” Wilcox said.
The 35-year-old Alex Jensen earned the recognition of a distinguished basketball player while playing under mentor Rick Majerus at the University of Utah, where he was named as the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year in 2000. Alex then played professionally in Turkey from 2000-2007 and during this time; he clinched the All-FIBA Europe Cup Defender in 2004.
After finishing his career as a player, Alex Jensen joined Saint Louis University, where he served as an assistant coach under Majerus. Alex quickly made a difference and helped the team to appear in their first postseason trip since 2004 in the 2009-2010 season. Jensen’s defensive acumen made Saint Louis a formidable threat on the back court as the team allowed only 62.4 points per game to the opposition that season.
On getting this new opportunity, Jensen was very excited.
"This is a rare and unique opportunity to be part of a great organization. I'm honoured to be selected as the first coach in Canton franchise history and excited to get to work." Jensen said at the press brief.
