Alex Kovalev looking to make NHL comeback with Montreal Canadiens
Looks like the National Hockey League (NHL) will have another legendary player making a comeback this year as Alex Kovalev announced that he wants to return to the league after a year of absence and definitely wants to play for the Montreal Canadiens.
While talking to the Montreal Gazette, Kovalev explained how he would love to wear a Montreal Canadiens jersey for another time after he left the NHL during the 2010-2011 regular season to go play in the Russian Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
"Hopefully, I'll find an NHL team," said Kovalev. "The preference is always going to be a team I've played on because you know the environment.”
"And I'd definitely like to come back to Montreal. They're all about the young guys, but I can help in all different ways. And I can still play. I have a lot of energy," he added.
His run in the KHL did not go successfully either as he was let go just after 22 games played due to a knee-injury during a two-year contract. Now being healthy and ready to get back at the sport, it is expected that the veteran 39-year-old will get back
into the swing with negotiations beginning soon.
Leaving Montreal Canadiens is something Kovalev definitely regrets to have done and wishes to correct that mistake now if he gets the chance.
"I always think about having left Montreal," Kovalev said. "You make a mistake in life and you learn from it. I would make a different move if I could have that back.”
Alex Kovalev, a physical right winger, was drafted as the 15th overall player during round-one of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft by New York Rangers. He spent nearly seven seasons with the Rangers before being traded to Pittsburgh Penguins, than back
to Rangers and Montreal Canadiens. He also played nearly two seasons with Ottawa Senators before playing his final 20 with Penguins.
Kovalev’s career has always been filled with ups and downs as at one point, he was a player that potted 95 points (44 goals, 51 assists) in just one season.
It will be interesting to see where Alex Kovalev will land for the upcoming season, if he can get a deal with anyone that is.
