Alex Kovalev scores 1000th point
Ottawa Senators forward Alex Kovalev notched 1000 career points in the Senators 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday 23 November by scoring a first period power play goal. Kovalev had a goal and an assist on the night and was awarded the game's first
star for his efforts.
With Kings forward Wayne Simmonds in the box, the Senators won a face-off deep in the Los Angeles zone. Sergei Gonchar got off a shot from the point which deflected right to Kovalev, who fired a quick slap shot that shattered his stick as the puck flew past
Jonathan quick in the Kings' goal.
"It's kind of a unique way, you get your 1,000th point, you break your stick and then hit the 10-minute mark exactly so it's like 1,000 points, so I thought that was just a joke they put on the board," said Kovalev to reporters about his goal that occurred
exactly at the ten-minute mark (10:00) of the first period.
The goal was Kovalev's sixth of the season and 418th of his career.
"It was definitely good to get that off the bat, and kind of in a unique way, to break a stick," Kovalev continued. "In my museum when you look at the stick it won't be that hard to find that 1,000th point stick. I shot it too hard. I really wanted to get
that through and if it didn't break, it probably would have broke the net."
After last night's game, along with his 418 goals, Kovalev has also amassed 583 assists during two separate spells with the New York Rangers, five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and five seasons with the Montreal Canadiens before joining the Senators
last season.
Kovalev became just the 76th player in NHL history, and now joins Sergei Fedorov and Alexander Mogilny as the only Russian-born players, to achieve the milestone.
