Alex Leapai: I will beat Kevin Johnson via knockout and will defend my gold - Boxing News
Alex Leapai, the current IBF Australasian heavyweight champion, recently reiterated his resolve to defend his gold authoritatively adding that one man will definitely get knocked out and I assure that man will not be him since Kevin Johnson has never faced
a pounder like me.
Alex and Kevin are scheduled to collide in a 12-round skirmish which will headline the pay-per-view promoted and organised by Noel Thornberry of Thornberry Promotions. The ring for the event will be stretched at Doomben Racecourse arena situated in Ascot,
Queensland, Australia.
The Sunday April 1, 2012 event will be co-headlined by the eight-round non-title bout between Todd Kidd and Joel Dela Cruz. The extravaganza was originally meant to take place on March 18, 2012 but Kevin was reported to have caught severe flu while on his
way to Australia.
As a result a formal request was lodged by Kevin’s camp which was graciously accepted and the bout was postponed for two weeks. In a recent pre-bout press conference, the duo shared their views and vowed to come out of the ring victorious.
Alex, 32, is a top notch heavyweight pugilist who has been in a total 31 bouts and came out victorious in 25. He has collected 20 of his total wins by knockout and has lost just three bouts.
The Aussie number one is on a long nine-bout win streak after his last draw decision to Masataka Takehara and will strive hard to defend the gold that he won in a bout against Okello Peter.
Kevin, on the other hand, is a bit less experienced when compared to Alex. Infamous as the ‘Kingpin’, the 32-year-old American has been in a total 27 bouts and came out victorious in 25. He has lost just one bout to Vitali Klitschko, a formidable name in
the division.
The Atlanta hailing Johnson lacks the knockout ability and does not possess raw powered jabs. He has collected just 11 of his wins by knockout. Alex, widely known as ‘The Lionheart’, while sharing his thoughts said, “It’s not going the distance, someone
is going to get knocked out and it isn’t going to be me. He has not faced a puncher like me.”
Johnson, while putting forth his firm determination predicted that he will nail Alex within eight rounds. Kevin said, “The Lionheart hasn’t met anyone like the Kingpin, I am going to end Leapai’s career, it will not last 8 rounds.”
Kevin is on three-bout win streak and recently nailed Harold Sconiers whereas Alex collected a first round technical knockout win over Troy Weida and is on a 17-bout win streak since his last loss to Colin Wilson.
