Alex Liddi comments on recent outing as Seattle Mariners look crisp with young blood
The Seattle Mariners looked good on Tuesday, September 20 at Target Field in Minneapolis when they beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 for the first game of the series.
The young blood in Manager Eric Wedge’s line-up was ever present on the strike zone as the Mariners’ edged past the Twins.
Alex Liddi, the first Italian player in almost 50 years to play in the Major League, smashed a two run homer to equalise for his team. First baseman and left-fielder, Mike Carp went 5-for-5 in the night to move the club’s players around the bases. The two
were also present in the ninth inning when Brandon League fought off hitters on a bases loaded situation.
The two young stars were instrumental in getting Rene Tosoni and Danny Valencia out on League’s charge.
Liddi has been a marvel in the Mariners’ line-up. The third baseman was at his best as he led Miguel Olivo home with a home-run. This was his second consecutive homer after registering one hit out of the park against the Cleveland Indians.
"It's something good, something special," Liddi said. "We all came up together through the Minor Leagues and we've played together for a while. It's something really good and comfortable for us."
The Italian talked about his mentality when he delivered the vital blow against the Twins’ starter Liam Hendriks.
"Early in that at-bat I swung at two bad pitches," Liddi said. "With two strikes I just wanted to put the ball in play and battle and try to get a knock to push Olivo home [from second]. Fortunately, he hung me a slider and I was able to hit it out."
The Mariners are not looking for a qualification in the postseason. Wedge is seasoning his young roster for the coming season and it appears he is doing a good job.
If the club does well as it has done in the last few games, they can give the Los Angeles Angels and the Texas Rangers a hard time in the American League West.
