Alex McLeish builds up Darren Bent as a replacement for Wayne Rooney – International Football
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 in the English national team setup after it was recently revealed that the Englishman would be facing a three
match ban next summer in the 2012 European Championships. Bent has been on a high run of form since his transfer to Aston Villa in the 2011 January transfer window.
The former Sunderland striker has already netted eleven goals for Villa in 22 appearances. This season he has been a main man for the Villains already as the likes of Ashley Young and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Stewart-Downing-c34221 were sold by the club in the
summer transfer window. Bent scored for England in their 2-2 draw with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Montenegro-c2959 as well but he has struggled to gain a permanent place in the English national team squad thus far.
McLeish is adamant that Bent has the traits which enable him to take over from Rooney in the English national team setup as Rooney will most definitely be missing the group stages of 2012 European Championships next summer. A debate
on whether or not Rooney should be included in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749’s European Championship squad is already under way and many do see Bent as a suitable replacement for the Manchester United striker.
McLeish said in his latest interview, "He (http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Darren-Bent-c10358) is a great finisher and he has a lot of other aspects to his game as well. Maybe because of the systems with one up front over the last year, people don't see the other parts
to his game. But I've been impressed by Bent's overall play. I used to think that he was just a last-third man but there is a lot more to his game.
The Aston Villa manager added, “I didn't say that I didn't rate him as a player [beforehand] but I thought he was that poacher type, which he is. But there are definitely other strings to his bow. He is not a target man as such,
but he is decent in the air and can hold things up so he is a much better all-round player than he is given credit for”.
