Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish has defended match official Michael Oliver’s decision to award the Villans a penalty in the 1-1 draw against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.
The match referee pointed to the penalty spot in the 58th minute, after the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gabriel-Agbonlahor-c14288 inside the eight-yard box. Although it was the smallest of tugs by
the former Arsenal defender, McLeish believes that the match official was spot on.
Moreover, along with a controversial penalty decision against QPR, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Hutton twice handed the ball inside the Aston Villa penalty box. The contentious decisions from the match official prompted
host manager Neil Warnock to describe the standard of refereeing as embarrassing.
However, McLeish has different views about referee and was satisfied with the standard of match officiating at Loftus Road. The Scotsman believes that Aston Villa deserved a penalty and has insisted that referee made the right decision.
The Scotsman said in his post match interview, “I thought it was a penalty. As soon as he blew his whistle and pointed, I knew. I felt http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gabi-c14252 Agbonlahor was impeded.”
Armand Traore was given his marching order shortly after conceding the penalty as the French defender again fouled Agbonlahor. McLeish feels that the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 left back deserved a second yellow and added, “I felt Agbonlahor was impeded again when he
was running through the middle after the goal, and he ended up with a booking when he chased the guy back.”
McLeish also shed some light on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-Hutton-c4253’s handball incident inside the penalty box but the Scotsman has asserted that it would have been a soft penalty to give and Michael Oliver was right to let the play go.
“I also know QPR claimed for a couple that hit Hutton’s arm but if you’re going to give penalties for those, then I think we’ve just got to say ‘any time it hits somebody’s hand or arm, it’s a penalty' - we would end up seeing a lot more goals," Alex McLeish
concluded.
After 1-1 draw at Loftus Park, Aston Villa are placed eighth whereas Queen Park Rangers are ninth in the league standings.
