The Scotsman continues on as the manager of Aston Villa despite opposition to his management by a group of supporters. In a season with many ups and downs, Aston Villa have successfully managed to avoid relegation from the English Premier League.
It was West Bromwich Albion’s equalizing goal against Bolton Wanderers that confirmed Aston Villa would remain in the Premier League next season. McLeish admitted his first season at the club had not been the best, but that he expected an improvement next
season.
The former Birmingham boss has remained committed to the club and even with the last game of the season approaching, McLeish has refused to consider the possibility that he would be leaving the club in the summer transfer window.
McLeish said in an interview:
“I have not given that any thought at all. I think we have worked well together as board and manager and staff. We have had a difficult season but it was anticipated. We did say about it being transitional.
Now hopefully we can move forward with some good signings and a little bit of change.”
When asked if he felt he had failed this season, McLeish replied he did not think one season was a failure since it was his first season in charge. He claimed he could not be expected to lead the side to the Premier League title in his first season with
them.
The Scottish manager pointed out the many problems Aston Villa had to face in the season with injuries and having to bring in players from the reserve team. He revealed:
“We have underachieved in terms of past history, no doubt about that, in terms of name Aston Villa.
But losing four or five players at crucial moments of the season...we have missed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Darren-Bent-c10358 for 19 games now. I would have expected four or five goals in those games at least which would have made things more comfortable.”
