Alex McLeish wants to keep http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 target Carlos Cuellar at Aston Villa – EPL News
Newly appointed Aston Villa manager, Alex McLeish, has revealed that the under-fire defender, Carlos Cuellar, is part of his plans and will stay at the Villa Park.
Cuellar joined Aston Villa from Ranger for £8 million four years ago and has been heavily linked with a move back to the Scottish Champions since the start of the transfer window.
The 29-year-old defender was tipped for success at the Villa Park, however, the Spanish centre-back failed to make an impact at the Birmingham-based club. Cuellar also lost his starting berth at Aston Villa and slipped down the pecking order during Gerard
Houllier’s reign.
The former Osasuna centre-back, who won the Scottish Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award in his lone season at Ibrox, has also publicly expressed his desire to join Rangers. Cuellar was a standout player of the Blues that won the Scottish
Cup and he also made a record 65 appearances for Rangers in his debut season.
Cuellar revealed that he had the best time at Ibrox and wants to force a move to the Scottish Champions.
“I was so happy at Rangers and this time, if I get the chance to return, then I will follow what I want to do. It's exciting if there is a possibility to go back because all of those good memories come back - the city, the club, the people, how much they
loved me and how much I loved them,” said the 29-year-old defender.
Rangers have also made an official offer for their former defender, who is currently recovering from a knee operation. But McLeish is determined to keep hold of Cuellar and wants the Spanish defender to fight for his place at the Villa Park.
McLeish, who made a controversial switch from Birmingham City to Aston Villa, has confirmed Rangers’ interest in Cuellar and said, “I know there is interest from Rangers but I have to assess things from an Aston Villa point of view. Maybe we have to keep
Carlos here and he has got to fight for his place again."
The Spaniard has only made 76 appearances during his three-year stay at the Villa Park.
