Alex Ribeiro and Willian Cardoso make their way into Round 3 of Burton Toyota Pro – Surfing News
Brazil’s Alex Ribeiro and his fellow countryman Willian Cardoso advanced through to the third round (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Burton Toyota Pro at Newcastle Surfest after clinching victory in their respective
Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at Merewether Beach in New South Wales, Australia, on Wednesday, March 14.
France’s Marc Lacomare and Australia’s Jordin Watson also advance through into the next round of the competition after securing runner-up place in the 15th and 16th heat respectively.
With two-to-three foot waves breaking at Merewether Point on day three of the event, there was ample opportunity for the surfers to post big scores on the score-board. However, the competition for the juicy waves was expected to be nothing short of intense
as the competition field comprised of world’s best surfers who hardly seemed like the type to allow their rival to get hold off a juicy wave without putting up a fight.
Ribeiro adjust well to the surfing conditions at hand while squaring off with Lacomare, Australia’s Dion Atkinson and South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries in the 15th heat.
The Brazilian surfer began to show aggression right in the opening minutes of the heat. Within no time, he locked his first business-wave to post a 6.67 on the score-board. After collecting a series of average scores, Ribeiro went on to lock his second business-wave
to unload a string of exquisite tricks for a 7.77. The resultant heat-total of 14.44 points served to seal the deal in his favour.
Lacomare successfully made the Round 3 cut as well after earning a 7.57 and 6.80 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 14.37 points, which put him in runner-up place.
Atkinson and De Vries got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 12.80 and 11.50 points respectively.
The 16th heat saw Cardoso get the better of Guadeloupe’s Charles Martin and the two Australians Watson and Lincoln Taylor to advance through into the next round.
The Brazilian surfer scored a 6.23 off his first business-wave and eventually added an additional 7.23 points to his account to finish with a heat-total of 13.46 points.
Watson managed to extend his life in the event as well after scoring a 5.50 and 6.23 off his two business-waves for a heat-total of 11.73 points.
Martin finished third with a heat-total of 10.50 points, while Taylor rounded out the bottom position with a two-wave total of 9.90 points. The third and fourth-place finish of the two surfers led to their elimination from the competition.
