Alex Rodriguez expected to miss half the season, Derek Jeter relaxed about it – MLB News
When third baseman Alex Rodriguez revealed that he will miss most part of the next season because of another hip injury, Captain Derek Jeter showed little concern over it. In an interview with a leading sports website, Jeter said the Yankees will be among
American League’s elite clubs without their regular third baseman.
“Why not?” Jeter said Monday afternoon while talking to the journalists. “We went though a lot of injuries last year. Mo (Rivera) missed (most of) the season, Alex missed a big part of the season, Andy (Pettitte) was hurt. The list goes on and on.”
He added, “If you’re going to win, you’re going to need contributions from a lot of guys. We’ve never been a team that relied on one particular person, so there’s no reason we can’t be a great team.”
Jeter added that the Yankees went through a lot of injuries last season as well but somehow they managed to finish at the top of the American League East Division standings table. Yankees’ regular closer Mariano Rivera missed the entire last season and starting
pitcher Andy Pettitte also had to be benched because of an ankle injury.
Jeter is convinced the Yankees have enough depth and quality in their line-up to be a great team. He admitted A-Rod is an integral part of the club but added that the Yankees have the capacity to win the league without their star third baseman.
Derek’s season ended prematurely in the playoffs last year when he suffered a severe ankle injury. Without their Captain, the Yankees were unable overcome the Tigers, missing out on an excellent opportunity to win the World Series title. According to sources,
Jeter’s left ankle is healing just as expected and he will be ready for the 2013 Spring Training.
Speaking publicly for the first time since fracturing his ankle, Jeter made several jokes. He talked about his recent photo that led media to declare that he has put on a lot of weight while recovering from injury. Jeter, who has been resting for the last
6 to 7 weeks, said he will walk in a boot in the next few days.
