Based on the fact that Philadelphia Phillies need reliable fielders and quality batters, it is not hard to predict as to what kind of players they will be looking for in the offseason.
Apart from Melky Cabrera, they may be keeping an eye on Rodriguez and making sure that as soon as the possibility arises they obtain him.
In the case of Cabrera, there are more chances that the Phillies acquire him.
As far as Rodriguez is concerned, the fact he has the power to veto his trade in the existing contract with the New York Yankees makes it less likely that he ends up playing for the Phillies in the next season.
Rodriguez has not performed up to his potential in 2012 regular season. While he maintains an extravagant contract with the Yankees, he has certainly not done justice with the amount of money he fetches every year from the club.
The Yankees may be willing to get rid of him, after they witnessed below par performances from him in the season. Earlier the speculations spread which said that the possibility of trade between the Yankees and the Miami Marlins including Rodriguez cannot
be ruled out.
Although the Yankees’ officials immediately rubbished the reports, the impression that the club is extremely disappointed with Alex Rodriguez could not be repelled.
When it comes to getting traded to one of the smaller market teams, Rodriguez may be highly resistant. On the other hand, he can be more receptive of the idea of being sent to the likes of the Phillies.
Rodriguez loves being a part of the big teams. He likes to play crucial matches in the post-season and deliver match winning shows at the plate.
The fact he could not lead the Yankees to wins late in the post-season this year will be disheartening for him. He will be looking to make up for the poor outings in the upcoming season.
At the moment, he is passing through such a phase of his career where his confidence may be affected badly. He may start doubting his abilities after being unable to get rid of the decline.
Spring Training will provide him with an excellent opportunity to work on his technique and find his way back to some top-notch form as hitter.
It will be interesting to observe the events that lead to the likelihood of any trade of Rodriguez in the offseason.
