Alex White excited about playing for the Houston Astros- MLB Update
The recently traded Alex White has taken a liking to the Houston Astros already. White was acquired in a trade with the Colorado Rockies that saw Astros reliable closer Wilton Lopez move to the Colorado ball club. Alex will be competing for a spot on the
Astros opening rotation in spring training.
The 24-year-old has so far pitched in 33 Major League games. In 2012, he got to start 20 of the 23 games he played in and posted a 2-9 record with a 5.51 ERA. It’s not all that surprising considering that the Rockies had struggled in the pitching department
during the 2012 season and finished last on just about every pitching table in the Major League.
Originally drafted in 2009 by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of First-Year Player Draft and was later moved to Colorado as a part of trade. His professional career kicked off in 2010, when he represented two Minor League teams. In 2012, he played
11 games for the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox posting a 3-4 record with a 3.71 ERA.
Alex himself is quite excited by the move and is hopeful of performing well. White believes that he will get better opportunities in the Houston Astros and is looking forward to serving the ball club well.
"That's the biggest key for me is I feel like I'm going to get an opportunity that I want in Houston, and it's just an exciting time," he said. "I really think I'm going to be in a good place and help the organisation."
White is a fierce competitor and is not scared of giving it his all.
"I really pride myself on getting outs and doing it however I have to do it," he said.
He has a variety of pitches in his repertoire and working hard he can certainly improve his pitching by leaps and bounds. He will not have to worry about avoiding fly balls in Houston as he had to in the High Altitude Coors Field in Colorado.
He wasn’t too pleased about being moved to the bullpen in the latter part of the season by the Rockies, something he believes was counterproductive. Alex believes that he still learnt a great deal from the stint.
"I felt like I was throwing the ball well and getting outs when I needed them. I think a move to the bullpen just set me back a little bit, but other than that, the second half was great for my growing-up process," White said.
Alex White is a young pitcher with loads of potential. If the Houston Astros can get him in the mix of big league at some point in time during the 2013 season, if not at the start, he can certainly learn and do well in the longer run.
