Alex Zanardi tips Lewis Hamilton to bounce back in 2012 – Formula 1 news
Alex Zanardi has advised Lewis Hamilton to better his performance in 2012.
Zanardi a former Italian driver who lost his legs in 2001 in a champ car crash, advised Hamilton to go for the kill in 2012 to make a comeback. Zanardi was fired from Williams in 1999.
Hamilton went through the worst season since he debuted back in 2007. The British endured a lot of criticism from former and current players over his on-track behaviour. The Stewards met with him more than any other driver during the season and was slapped
with a 5-Grid penalty for the Indian GP for ignoring a yellow flag during one of the practice sessions. He was given several drive-through penalties during the season.
If that was not enough for a horrible season, 2011 was also the first instance when Hamilton was behind his teammate on points since his debut. Jenson Button drove impressively through the season and although Hamilton and Button had three Grands Prix wins
each Button finished 2nd in the drivers’ championship.
Zanardi explained that the poor showing in 2011 only shows that Hamilton is also human like the rest, and such things are bound to happen, the important thing is to be able to bounce back from such setbacks. It is all part of the sport.
“I mean if at his age what has happened to him had happened to me, I would probably have been in Monte Carlo with the biggest boat, with the gold Rolex watch, looking down at people and asking ‘what the h**l do you want from me? I’m the best guy on the planet,”
Zanardi said.
“I had the privilege of interviewing him once for an Italian magazine and I really discovered a guy who is very, very mature for his age. So this tells me that basically he put one foot out of step but I’m sure next year he will have learned his lesson,”
he added.
It would be interesting to see how Hamilton performs in 2012, it is expected that McLaren will come back strongly in the upcoming season, as are other teams like Mercedes and Ferrari.
