Alexander Bury surprises Michal Schmid in the final qualifier – Siberia Open 2012 CH
Seeded seventh in the qualifying draw, Alexander Bury of Belarus stunned the top seed, Michal Schmid of Czech Republic, in straight sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the main round of the Siberia Cup in Tyumen, Russia.
Bury required one hour and 33 minutes to down his higher ranked opponent in a hard fought contest and book his place in the main draw of this hard court challenger event.
At the beginning, both players proceeded stably, holding their serve in the first seven games to take the score to 4-3 in favour of Schmid. The Czech national stung a break in the eighth and made the most of his advantage to triumph
6-3.
Schmid bombarded five aces and did not hit even a single double fault in the first set. The Czech contender succeeded in putting in just 68 percent of the first deliveries but he converted whopping 15 of the 17 of them into points.
The 23-year-old did not face any break threat and utilised the only opportunity he got.
Ranked 446th in the world, Schmid gained a solid grip on the contest and was looking to close it quickly, as he raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set. However, Bury made a dramatic turn around, breaking his rival three
times and claiming six of the subsequent seven games to capture it 7-5.
The Belarusian banged in three aces and committed a couple of double faults, keeping his first serve percentage at 74 and securing 17 of the 25 points on them. On the other hand, Schmid fired four aces but he also made the equal
number of double faults. The Czech participant failed to save any of the three break points he faced in the second set.
Pattern of decider was exactly same as the opener but this time it was in Bury’s favour. The Belarusian contestant and his Czech rival did not drop their serve in the first seven games to take the score to 4-3 in the former’s favour.
Bury struck at that moment and capitalised on it to win 6-3.
The Belarusian player will face local wild card entrant, Anton Manegin, in the first round of the main draw.
