The 2008 Beijing Olympics silver medallist, Alexander Dale Oen of Norway, has improved the Men’s 100m breast-stroke championship record on the second day of the 2011 Canet En Roussillon.
The Canet En Roussillon is an international swimming championship, which is the second last stop of the four events of the 2011 Mare Nostrum Series.
Dale Oen won the title in a championship record time of 1 minute and 00.29 seconds. His remarkable stroke placed him 0.65 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Ryo Tateishi of Japan. Tateishi stepped on the podium for the silver medal, posting a time of
1 minute and 00.94 seconds. They were followed by South African swimmer, Cameron Van Der Burgh, who secured the bronze medal in a noteworthy time of 1 minute and 01.14 seconds.
Oen won the silver medal in the 100m breast-stroke event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also won the gold medal in the same category, along with a silver medal in the 200m breast-stroke at the 2010 European Championships in Budapest.
He completed his first lap in the second position, as Van Der Burgh dominated the initial lap of the race in a time of 28.41 seconds. Dale Oen and Tateishi followed him in the first lap, completing their swims with timings of 28.69 and 28.70 seconds, respectively.
In the second-half of the race, Oen put forward a scintillating swim to overcome Van Der Burgh’s effort. Oen joined him in a neck-to-neck race in the first ten metres of his final lap. Japanese champion, Tateishi, also sprinted his way to the finishing wall
and joined the league of the top fastest swimmers.
In the final fifteen metres of the swim, Oen and Tateishi gained a slight lead from Van Der Burgh, where Oen out-touched his strongest rival by 0.65 seconds and clocked a time of 1:00.29 minutes for the gold medal.
The champion was extremely happy with his winning effort and expressed his desire of performing in the same fashion at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
