Alexander Dimitrenko takes on Kubrat Pulev for the vacant EBU heavyweight title – Boxing news
Alexander Dimitrenko, the former EBU (European) heavyweight champion, will enter the ring to take on Kubrat Pulev, the current IBF International heavyweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will have Alexander’s previously vacated EBU heavyweight title
up for grabs.
The duo will co-headline the pay-per-view promoted by Wilfried Sauerland of Sauerland Event and Ulf Steinforth of Sport Events Steinforth. The ring for the bout will be stretched at Messehalle situated in Erfurt, Thuringen, Germany and the Saturday night
show will be headlined by the championship bout between Marco Huck and Ola Afolabi.
Alexander will enter the bout to reclaim the title that previously belonged to him. Unfortunately, due to an inadvertent injury the German number one pugilist was forced to forfeit the title.
Kubrat and Alexander both reside in the top 10 world rankings. Dimitrenko, 29, has been in a total 33 bouts and overshadows Pulev clearly by his experience. He has lost just one bout in his whole career to Eddie Chambers other than that he has emphatically
nailed all 32 opponents and 21 of them via knockout.
Also known as ‘Sascha’, Alexander last fought in September 2011 and collected a unanimous decision win in his favour. The German proud grabbed the EBU title after collecting a technical knockout win over Yaroslav Zavorotnyi.
Pulev, Alexander’s Saturday night opponent, boasts an undefeated win streak in a total 15 bouts. The 30-year-old recently nailed many huge names such as Dominick Guinn, Paolo Vidoz, Yaroslav Zavorotnyi and others.
The Bulgarian hailing Kubrat, well known as ‘The Cobra’, became the IBF international heavyweight champion after collecting a unanimous decision win against Travis Walker.
The duo recently met at the press conference in which the whole pay-per-view was put forth the media. During the media interaction, the optimistic Pulev commented, “The fight against Alexander Dimitrenko is going to be the toughest of my career to this point.
First I want to be the champion of Europe. After that I will start thinking about which Klitschko I want to fight next.”
The returning Alexander while sharing his thoughts about Pulev’s comments regarding the Klitschko said, “The only thing on my mind is the fight for the European title in Erfurt. I do not care about what other people are saying. I am taking one step after
the other.”
Later on the former EBU title-holder vowed to re-acquire the vacant gold and said, “Due to an injury I had to vacate my title. Now I am completely fine and I want to be the champion of Europe once more.”
The bout will be televised on Germany’s national television on May 5, 2012 and will also witness Robert Stieglitz defend his WBO super middleweight title against George Groves.
