Alexander Levy shares the lead at the Kazakhstan Open
Frenchman Alexander Levy stunned his rivals in the second round of the Kazakhstan Open after he carded an explosive 67 to seize the lead along with the American Peter Uihlein and Scott Henry of Scotland.
The event, which is also known as the ‘Major’ of the European Challenge Tour, is being played at the Zhailjau Golf Resort in Almaty.
Despite conceding a double bogey on the 11th hole, Levy managed to set a clubhouse lead with an 11-under par overall score, early in the round.
He started his round by carding a birdie on the first hole and followed that by another one on the third. However, a couple of back-to-back bogeys on the fourth and fifth hole offset his under par score.
Yet, the drop shots did not shatter his confidence and he birdied three of the last four holes before the turn.
His start on the back nine was not worthwhile, as he recorded a double bogey on the 11th hole and moved to a one-under par score.
He then sent the crowd cheering, after he shot four birdies on the last five holes of the day, and cemented his position on top of the leaderboard.
While talking to the European Tour’s official website, Levy said that he was pleased with his performance on day two. However, it would have made a big difference if he had avoided too many drop shots during the round.
“I played really well today,” said Levy. “I made just one big mistake with the double-bogey but I had a strong finish so I'm very happy. I kept focussed all day and after that mistake I still felt like I could continue to play well”.
“I continued to play well despite the mistake and I just told myself to just play my golf and I did that,” he added. “I like this course,” he continued. “You need to hit long and the par fives are easier if you can do that but I played well and didn’t make
many mistakes”.
Uihlein, in the meantime, managed to remain in the lead, after posting a two-under par 70 on day two.
Standing on the 18th tee, he had a great chance to remain in the sole lead, as he was 13-under par for the tournament.
However, a bogey to end the day dragged him to the share of the top spot on the leaderboard.
