Alexander Noren starts well at the Nordea Masters – Golf news
Sweden’s Alexander Noren made a late charge on day one of the Nordea Masters to get into contention for the top spot, on Thursday, May 30, 2013.
The tournament is being staged at the Bro Hof Slott Golf Club and is showcasing a strong field this season, as the last week’s BMW PGA Championship winner Matteo Manassero, the oldest winner on the European Tour
Miguel Angel and many other big names are participating in the event.
Prior to the start of the tournament, Noren was confident about taking advantage of the home course. After the first round, it appears he has certainly the chance to outshine his opponents at the end of the week.
He got off to a slow start, as he bogeyed the fourth hole. He then atoned for that blemish with a birdie on the sixth hole and reached the turn with an even par score.
The back nine of the course witnessed him picking up some pace, as he birdied the 11th and the 12th hole to show his intentions of ascending on the leaderboard.
He then added another three shots over the last four holes, to finish the day with a five-under par score. At the end of the day, he found himself sharing the third spot on the leaderboard, with four other players.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he said that it was a bit difficult to score on the front nine of the course. According to him, his off-the-tee game was really good. However, he failed to hit
the greens on regular basis, which did not allow him to create birdie chances on the front nine.
“It was a tough front nine,” said Noren. “I hit the driver good but didn’t hit the greens I wanted. Then I made birdie on 11 and mentally it was a very nice birdie so it gave me a very nice rhythm.”
“To the eye it looks like you can go for everything and what I’ve learned from this course is if you play a bit more conservatively on the par fives – if you’re on the green you will probably make a birdie,” he added.
Meanwhile, Matteo Manassero, the winner of last week’s BMW PGA Championship, shared the lead with Pablo Larrazábal after posting a six-under par 66.
