Alexander Povetkin retains WBA heavyweight title against Marco Huck – Boxing news
Despite having the home crowd advantage, Marco Huck, the WBO cruiserweight champion, was unable to collect a win over Russian Alexander Povetkin who successfully defended his WBA heavyweight title in the 12-round bout.
Alexander and Marco were scheduled to headline the pay-per-view put forth by Sauerland Event and the ring was stretched at Porsche-Arena situated in Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany on February 25, 2012.
Marco Huck is a surging young German who has been in a total 35 brawls and came out victorious in 34. He has collected 25 of his wins by knockout. Widely known as Kapt'n Huck, Marco has successfully defended his cruiserweight title a huge eight times.
Alexander, on the other hand, boasts a long undefeated winning streak of 23 bouts. Well known as ‘Sasha’, Povetkin has collected 16 of his total wins by knockout and was entering in his second WBA title defence brawl.
Marco entered the ring with great confidence and really put up a great show of strength, resilience, agility, footwork, and impressive punches. In the first six rounds, the whole arena was stunned at the startling pugilism of both men since no one was able
to determine as who is winning or losing.
From the eighth round and onwards Povetkin’s body started to wear out and fatigue was visible in his actions. Later on, in the 11th and 12th round the duo threw everything they had left in their bodies and strived hard to snatch as many points possible from
each other.
The brawl ended and the three judges, Philippe Verbeke, John Coyle, and Stanley Christodoulou awarded 114-114, 116-113, and 116-112 respectively to Alexander Povetkin. At the end of the brawl Povetkin admitted Marco’s impressive brawling and remarked, “I
underestimated him. Maybe I didn’t take this fight seriously enough.”
Marco who was bit sad at losing the title shot said, “Povetkin had a good performance, but [at the end] he couldn’t even stand and was still declared the champion. I think many of those who saw the fight saw me as the winner.”
The scores allocated by the three judges prove that Marco was just an inch away in nailing the champion. Ulli Wegener, Huck’s manager seconded his man’s words saying, “I told Marco ‘you have a chance for a KO win.’ He was gone. Just one more right and he
was finished!”
With this win Alexander has enhanced his invincible winning streak to 28 wins and Marco has collected his career’s second defeat in a total 36 brawls.
