Alexander Povetkin wants to lock horns with Wladimir Klitschko – Boxing News
Alexander Povetkin is definitely one of the best heavyweight fighters around. Recently, the Russian defeated WBA mandatory challenger Hasim Rahman, to become the number one contender for the WBA crown. Povetkin, who holds ‘regular’ heavyweight title, believes
it is time for him to take on WBA heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.
“Wladimir Klitschko takes on Mariusz Wach from Poland next. The winner has until the end of February to face Alexander inside the ring,” said Kalle Sauerland, Povetkin’s promoter.
Klitschko also holds the WBO, IBO and IBF belts, making him a super heavyweight champion. Povetkin spoke to the media saying he would want to go head to head with Wladimir Klitschko.
“I would like to fight Wladimir. A fight between him and myself would be very exciting and interesting to watch,” said the Russian heavyweight.
Wladimir is currently scheduled to fight on November 10. According to Vladimir Hrunov, Povetkin’s manager, negotiations between Wladimir Klitschko’s camp and Povetkin’s camp will start once the Ukrainian champion is done with his next fight.
Moreover, Vladimir also erased doubts of Povetkin changing his trainer. As of now, Vladimir has asserted that the heavyweight will continue to train with his current trainer Kostya Tszyu.
Povetkin is an undefeated fighter who currently has the ‘regular’ heavyweight championship title from World Boxing Association. He won the title by defeating Ruslan Chagaev on August 26, 2011. In his starting days, Povetkin was being trained by Alexander
Zimin Teddy Atlas, but now he is with Kostya Tszyu.
Povetkin won a gold medal in amateur boxing prior to his advent in professional boxing. Since then, Povetkin has been fighting in Russia and Germany mainly, two countries that are considered home for heavyweight bouts.
Povetkin’s professional journey start in Germany on June 11, 2005, when he defeated Muhammed Ali Durmaz via second round TKO. Since then, the Russian has been making statements by knocking out his opponents brutally.
Povetkin is definitely a threat to Wladimir’s crown. If the duo get a chance to be in the ring together, the fierceness of both fighters will be high, trying to knock out the other.
