Alexander Semin signs with Carolina Hurricanes after playing 6 years for Washington Capitals –NHL Update
Free agent Alexander Semin has signed with Carolina Hurricanes in a one-year deal that is worth $7 million. The left-winger previously played with Washington Capitals, for whom he played for last six seasons and overall seven seasons in the National Hockey
League (NHL).
The deal was announced by General Manager and President of the Carolina Hurricanes, Jim Rutherford, on Thursday that both parties have agreed to the terms and have signed the contract.
This is the third time in a row that Semin has signed a one-year deal and has got a slight increment once again.
The first contract that the Russian left-winger signed with Washington Capitals in 2008 was worth $4.6 million for two years, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. Then he signed a one-year extension in 2010-2011 for $6 million and then again a one-year extension, next
season for $6.7 million.
After signing with Hurricanes, Semin looked happy and said he is looking forward to playing with new team-mates and have a winning season. The 28-year-old said,
"I'm very happy to be a Carolina Hurricane." "It's a great fit for me. I look forward to playing with great players, and putting together a winning season."
The 6-foot-2, 212 pounder, started his hockey career with Traktor Chelyabinsk, a Russian Major League team in 2001-2002. He moved to Lada Togliatti of Russian Super League (RSL) next season, before getting drafted as the 13th overall in the 2002
NHL draft by Washington Capitals.
Semin made his NHL debut with Washington Capitals in 2003-2004 season but was sent to Portland Pirates of American Hockey League (AHL) next, spent two more seasons with Lada Togliatti and then one with Khimik Moscow Oblast.
He returned to Washington Capitals next season and had a career turning season when he scored 73 points in just 77 games. He did not look back after that and kept moving forward as he averages around 60 points per season after playing seven seasons in NHL.
Born in Krasnoyarsk, Semin has played 469 games, scored 197 goals, made 211 assists and score total of 408 points.
Carolina Hurricanes’ general manager had only good things to say about him as the 67-year-old said,
"Alexander's elite skill level and ability to score from the wing fill an important need on the ice, and we hope that a fresh start in Carolina will serve both Alexander and our team well”.
