Alexander Ward ousts Roberto Ortega-Olmedo in the first round – Madrid Challenger 2012 CH
Wild card entrant, Roberto Ortega-Olmedo, received a straight sets defeat at the hands of the British player, Alexander Ward, in the first round of the Madrid Challenger 2012, in Madrid, Spain. Ward summed up
his 6-3, 6-2 win in approximately one hour and six minutes on Tuesday.
Ranked 440th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Alexander Ward, commenced an average start in the opener but held his initial serve. The local challenger clinched the
winning opportunity and drew the first blood, blotting a 2-1 lead in the third game. In the fourth game, the British professional picked pace and evened out the score line to 2-2. From that point onwards, Ward picked up impetus and broke his rival’s serve
in the sixth to stamp a 4-2 lead. Olmedo struggled hard but he could not sustain his rival’s pressure and he bestowed the opener onto his competitor without posting any resistance, facing a 3-6 loss.
The British right-hander displayed 59 percent initial serve accuracy, bagging away 14 of 20 first and six of 14 second delivery points. The Spaniard manifested 65 percent first serve presentation attaining a
reasonable score of 10 of 15 first but only one of eight second serve points.
The next set the 21-year-old Spanish challenger preserved his initial serve and confidently topped the scoreboard with 2-1. Gradually, his pace levelled down and Ward took opportunity of the circumstances to
break his serves in the fifth and the seventh game respectively. Ward gleefully journeyed until the end without facing a single resistance and eventually finished the match with a 6-2 win.
The 22-year-old, Ward, preserved a lower initial serve precision of 63 percent, converting 11 of 12 first and five of seven second delivery points. In comparison, the Spaniard managed to secure 71 percent first
serve with 11 of 17 first and just two of seven second serve points. He could not capitalize upon even a single break point, whereas Ward snatched two of three.
