  2. Surnames were not in use...

If we modernized/anglicized it, it might be Alexson, or Allison

  3. Surnames, as we know them to be now,  were not used during his lifetime. Here is what www.familysearch.org has listed:

Alexander The Great, King Of Macedonia (using the information below, his name would have been ALEXANDER HERACLEIDES KARANOS, or something similar)**

Birth:   Abt 356 B.C. ,Pella, Macedonia

    Death:   Abt 323 B.C.

    Parents

Father:  Philip II ,  King Of  Macedonia

    Mother:  Olympias of  Epirus

    Spouse:  Roxanna of Bactria

In Ancient Greece, during some periods, it became common to use one's place of origin as a part of a person's official identification (such as Alexander's wife-- Roxanna of Bactria, meaning her family lived in Bactria). For example, Alexander the Great was known by the clan name Heracles and was, therefore, Heracleides (as a supposed descendant of Heracles) and by the dynastic name Karanos/Caranus, which referred to the founder of the dynasty to which he belonged.
