Alexander vs. Brook rescheduled for late February – Boxing News
Welterweight titlist Devon Alexander was supposed to fight number one contender Kell Brook in January, but now the fight has been rescheduled due to Brook’s ankle injury, as reported by chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer.
According to Schaefer, the fight was previously scheduled for the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles but now they are working on a new venue and date. He further added that the fight will now headline a Showtime tripleheader in Detroit, including junior middleweight
champion Cornelius Bundrage’s title defence against Ishe Smit.
“We'll have two world title fights, and it could turn out to be three, so if we bring three world title fights, including one with hometown champion 'K9' Bundrage, I think we will do darn well there. Detroit is a great fight town,” said Schaefer to ESPN.com
earlier this week.
Schaefer revealed that Brook suffered an ankle injury during his training session, as reported by Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn.
“Kell sustained an ankle injury that has hampered his training and running work,” said Hearn.
“I'm concerned mainly for the traveling U.K. fans, and it's in no one's interest for the fight to fall through closer to the time, so I requested a three- to four-week delay to the original date of Jan. 19. This will eradicate the risk and ensure Kell will
be 100 percent for the biggest fight of his life.”
It should be noted here that this fight is extremely important for Brook, who will face Briton fight sensation Amir Khan if he defeats Devon. Brook already has a promise from Khan for a showdown if he is able to grab Alexander’s world title.
For now, Schaefer has asserted that they are working on a new venue or probably it will be the same one. Brook needs time to heal the injury, as he needs to ensure he devours Alexander in the ring, instead of being devoured. For him, this is the fight that
can take him to the next level in his career. After all, who would not want to cash in on ‘King’ Khan, especially after Danny Garcia gave an insight on how to beat the Brit.
