Alexandr Dolgopolov defeats Alex Bogomolov Jr. in the opener – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Ukrainian contender, Alexandr Dolgopolov, ended his four match losing streak, as he defeated world number 46, Alex Bogomolov Jr. of USA, in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the first round at the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday.
Playing at the grass courts of All England Club, the 21st ranked player took an hour and 50 minutes to pull victory over his American rival.
There was no early break in this contest, as both players held their serve in the first five games to take the score to 3-2 in favour of Dolgopolov. The Ukrainian struck in the sixth and consolidated on it to move ahead 5-2. Bogomolov
was unable to break back and lost the opening set 3-6.
Dolgopolov pounded six aces and won 18 of the 24 first delivery points. He looked a bit rusty on the second ones, as he committed a couple of double faults and lost eight of the 17 points on them. The right hander, however, converted
the only break point he received and amazingly saved all the seven he faced in the opener.
The Ukrainian did not wait for long to hit a blow to his opponent in the second set, as he broke Bogomolov in the third game and held his next serve to attain a 3-1 advantage. Just like the previous one, this was the sole strike
in the second set, as Dolgopolov maintained his lead till the end to seal it 6-4.
The 23-year-old, Dolgopolov, further improved his serve, as he bombarded eight aces on his opponent and committed only one double fault this time. He converted 17 of the 20 first deliveries into points and hit 17 winners in the
second set.
The Ukrainian contestant and his American opponent put on an impressive serving display in the third set, as they did not drop it in the first 10 games to square off the score at 5-5. Though, Dolgopolov pumped up the accelerator
at that moment, as he allowed Bogomolov to claim just three points in the following two and closed it 7-5.
After losing to Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarter-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open at the start of May, Dolgopolov had not won even a single match. He failed to clear the opening rounds at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, French
Open and Gerry Weber Open.
The Ukrainian will play world number 55, Benoit Paire of France, in the second round.
