Alexandr Dolgopolov jumps nine places to reach 16th position in Rankings – Tennis News
Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine has moved to 16th spot in the ATP Men’s Singles Rankings. The Ukrainian was ranked number 25th last week but performed brilliantly to make stride of nine places.
The Ukrainian collected 500 ranking points by winning an ATP World Tour 500 event last week. He defeated Germany’s former world number two, Tommy Haas, in three sets 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-1 in the final of Citi Open in Washington DC,
USA, on Sunday.
Dolgopolov played like a champion throughout the tournament, as he thrashed all of his opponents on his way to the title match. The right-hander did not drop even a single set in his four previous encounters. The Ukrainian defeated
Italy’s Flavio Cipolla, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain and American players, James Blake and Sam Querrey, before the final.
The 23-year-old lost the opening set by the closest of margins in the final but then bounced back to win two in a row. This is Dolgopolov’s first title of the season and second of his career.
The Ukrainian was really happy at the end of the match. He shared, "For sure, I’m very happy, and especially winning a match like that [which is] really tight, goes up and down, the rain breaks. I’m really happy with myself that
I stayed concentrated and was in the match in all the three sets."
Talking about his opponent, Dolgopolov said, "He was giving away more free points than he did in the first set and throughout the tournament when I watched him play. I think it was a part of him, a part of it being the final, a
part of my game. Everything helped it to go wrong for him.”
Dolgopolov is moving close to his highest ranking once again. The Ukrainian attained his best position of number 13 in the ATP Rankings at the start of this year. The 6ft tall can definitely improve further in this season by giving
a couple of good performances. He has a win/loss record of 23-15 in this year so far.
