Alexandr Dolgopolov ousts Albert Ramos in second round – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
12th seeded Ukrainian, Alexandr Dolgopolov, had some tough time before registering victory against the Spanish qualifier, Albert Ramos, in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday afternoon.
The enthralling three-setter took one hour and forty seven minutes to conclude in the favour of Dolgopolov, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Rated at number 18 in the world rankings, Dolgopolov displayed his prime form once again to qualify for the third round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event.
77th ranked Ramos stunned everyone by pocketing the first set early in the contest but lost his way in the later parts of the matchup to let Dolgopolov back in business. The 12th seed Ukrainian reeled off the last two sets with commanding ease to turn the tables on his opponent and registered his 36th victory of the running year.
The Spaniard secured 43 first serve points in the matchup, while Dolgopolov followed him with 31, yet finishing on the winning note. The Ukrainian was off to a steady start in the opener and kept the scores moving on even terms. Ramos finally made his move in the 12th game, nailing a critical serve break to close out the first set at 7-5 and got 1-0 lead in the contest to get the upper hand.
The Spaniard went through a terrible slump in the following set, coughing five costly double faults to give some vital opportunities to his opponent. Dolgopolov nailed two straight serve breaks to clinch the second set at 6-3 and then carried on his belligerence in the final set as well. The Ukrainian stung two more break points in the fourth and eighth game of the third set to finish off the matchup at 6-2 to get through to the third round of the tournament.
Dolgopolov will face the unseeded Australian, Bernard Tomic, in his next round clash to battle for a place in the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Tomic made a huge upset in the second round, when he outplayed the world number nine, Mardy Fish of the United States, in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to make it to the third round of the tournament.
