Alexandra Papusha pockets Women’s 50m backstroke gold: Day one – 2012 Zurich International Meet
Moscow SC’s Alexandra Papusha dictated terms to her challengers by pocketing gold medal of the Women’s 50m backstroke final on opening day of the 2012 Zurich International Meet in Switzerland on Saturday, February 25.
The Zurich meet is providing all swimmers with the opportunity to compete with each other in their main events and improve their strategy before the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Papusha proved her dominance over her challengers by completing her race in a time of 30.25 seconds. With her commendable form, she remained 0.44 seconds ahead of Ivana Gabrilo, who ended second with the timing of 30.69 seconds.
Nina Kost also served notice of her talent and occupied bronze medal of the event with an effort of 30.75 seconds.
In the meantime, Fabian Dalacker went on a rampage in the Men’s 50m breaststroke. Dalacker ensured his top finish on the podium by submitting an effort of 30.46 seconds. He was trailed by Valerio Romagnoli, who was 0.22 seconds behind and clinched silver
medal of the event in a time of 30.68 seconds.
Mark Fischer remained dominant for the third finest spot of the race as he concluded his swim in a time of 30.70 seconds.
In the meantime, the crowd witnessed a gruelling effort of Australian comeback king, Ian Thorpe in the Men’s 400m freestyle. Thorpe, who finished fourth in the 100m freestyle discipline, went full throttle in the 400m discipline.
With his persistent efforts, Thorpe succeeded in claiming victory of the mediocre distance freestyle event as he reported a time of 3 minutes and 59.48 seconds. He was chased by Jovan Mitrovic, who stayed 0.96 seconds behind and settled on the victory stand
for silver medal with an effort of 4 minutes and 00.44 seconds.
Similarly, the second position holder remained in a lead of almost four seconds over Alexandre Liess, who completed his swim in 4 minutes and 04.53 seconds for bronze medal.
In addition, the session ended after the conclusion of all listed events while the podium finishers were invited on the victory stand for their immaculate efforts at the medal ceremony of the championship.
