Alexandra Purcell claims Women’s 50m freestyle gold – Junior Pan Pacific Championships
Alexandra Purcell of Australia claimed gold medal of the Women’s 50m freestyle on fourth day of the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday, August 26.
Purcell showered her expertise in the shortest freestyle discipline as she spoiled the party of her opponents and occupied gold medal. She sustained her fastest qualification spot of the event by dominating the playoff and secured the crown of the event.
Purcell, who was the fastest swimmer in the qualifying round, remained untouchable in the playoff as she surfaced on the finishing blockade for gold medal by producing a nice time of 25.15 seconds.
The Australian swimmer was chased by Olivia Smoliga of USA, who stayed 0.24 seconds slower from upsetting her former finisher and hit the wall for silver medal by submitting a time of 25.39 seconds.
Smoliga was followed by Ellen O’Rourke of Australia, who stayed just 0.01 seconds away from improving her position and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal by reporting a time of 25.40 seconds.
The third position holder was chased by Simone Manuel of USA, who suffered a loss of just 0.05 seconds from her foregoing finisher and settled on the finishing wall as fourth fastest swimmer with an effort of 25.45 seconds.
Manuel was followed by Victoria Chan of Canada, who stayed 0.36 seconds away from her and finished fifth in the event by clocking a time of 25.81 seconds.
Chan was trailed by Maho Takiguchi of Japan, who stayed only two arm strokes behind and secured sixth spot of the event by posting a time of 26.13 seconds.
Takiguchi remained 0.23 seconds ahead of Paige Kremer of Canada, who secured seventh position of the race by clocking a time of 26.36 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was obtained by Rino Hosoda of Japan, who was 0.13 seconds apart and completed her swim in a time of 26.49 seconds.
In addition, Purcell was delighted with her gold finish in the single lap event and claimed that she would continue her struggle to achieve the same at superior levels of swimming.
