Alexandra Stevenson defeats Coco Vandeweghe in the qualifying final of the 2011 Family Circle Cup
American tennis player Alexandra Stevenson took part in the final round of the qualifying singles for the 2011 Family Circle Cup earlier today, defeating compatriot Coco Vandeweghe in three sets to win the match and make it into the main draw of the Premier
tournament.
World Number 265 Stevenson’s victory came as a surprise to most spectators, as the player is currently ranked much lower than World Number 91 Vandeweghe. In addition to this, Stevenson is also 30 years old and has lost the advantage of age over Vandeweghe,
who is only 19 years old.
Despite these odds, the San Diego resident managed to prove herself during the match by giving Vandeweghe a run for her money. She scored a total of three aces, while her opponent could not manage a single one. Stevenson was challenged to a total of fifteen
break points, out of which she managed to fight off ten. Vandeweghe, on the other hand, could not defend six of eighteen break points which Stevenson successfully converted.
Alexandra Stevenson won the final round of the qualifying singles despite suffering a mid-match lapse. She qualified for the main draw by scoring seven points more than Coco Vandeweghe in this match.
Stevenson has been part of the Women’s Tennis Association Tour for over a decade, having joined as a professional player in 1999. Despite her tenure on tour, she has not yet won a career title. On the other hand, Coco Vandeweghe turned pro just three years
ago and has shown remarkable progress on the WTA Tour. The player has already broken into the Top 100, and it seems as if she intends to cement her place as a WTA Top pro. This loss was uncharacteristic for Vandeweghe, who normally does not freeze up in front
of better players.
This was Alexandra Stevenson’s second victory over her fellow American tennis pro. They have played a total of four matches against each other, and this recent victory gives both players an equal division of these meetings. Their current head to head record
is 2 all.
Their first meeting took place in 2007, when Vandeweghe was ranked World Number 746 as a junior player. Although she had not yet turned pro, the American teenager won the match by default after Stevenson retired in the first set. Vandeweghe was leading the
match 5-1 at this point. Their last meeting took place earlier this year in Memphis in the round of the last 16. Vandeweghe scored a straight-sets win over Stevenson on the hard courts.
The qualifier will compete against fourteenth seed and compatriot Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the first round of the Family Circle Cup’s main draw.
