Surprise team of the 2010/2011 Ligue 1 campaign when they finished fifth in the league standings, FC Sochaux Montbéliard have found it hard to assert their authority this campaign.
In a summer transfer window that was spent largely trying to hold on to the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Modibo-Maiga-c26167, Les Lionceaux didn’t really do much buying. However, the club’s chairman, Alexandre Lacombe has now hinted that the club
could show some activity in the upcoming winter transfer window.
Languishing in the bottom half of the table at 11th place, Sochaux lost to Stade Brestois 2-0 on November 20, 2011 in Week 14 of the Ligue 1 action. The signs were right when Sochaux beat seven-time Ligue 1 champions http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-Lyonnais-c40130 2-1 at
home but the trend was not continued when they lost to Brest.
In an interview with French publication Foot Mercato, the Frenchman gave insight on happenings at the club.
While asked a question about the club’s start to the season, Lacombe said that his team has done well in staying away from the relegation zone but admitted that a bad start to the month of August was the main reason behind the club’s lowly standing.
Unluckily, Sochaux were dumped out of the Europa League in the preliminary stages at the hands of Ukrainian side FC Metalist. However, Lacombe is not too worried about that even though he admits that it would have been good to be playing in a European competition.
While talking about the rumours regarding Anin and Maiga, Lacombe said that rumours will keep on flying and he knows exactly what’s happening in the club. Lacombe also said that he is not concerned about what the papers have to say about his players.
With such a poor start to the new campaign, many fans have called out for some investment in the winter transfer window and Lacombe has hinted out at a possible arrival of new names to the Stade Auguste Bonal.
“I do not want to talk about that. We recently made a big point. Sometimes there are opportunities. But I do think that there will be some activity in the transfer window but it will be very small as there are a lot of uncertainties surrounding the negotiation
of TV rights,” Lacombe said.
As a part of the member of the FFF executive committee, Lacombe has certainly shown a lot of patience with the club and Sochaux can recover from a poor start to the campaign if they are able to put together a good run of results.
Lacombe thinks that finishing the season once again at 5th place could be hard but has targeted a top 10 finish by the end of the campaign which would not be a bad finish for the club.
