Alexi Markov takes ninth stage as Haas retains his leader’s jersey in the Tour of Tasmania 2011
Russian team’s Alexi Markov exhibited a brilliant performance in the ninth stage of the Tour of Tasmania 2011 on Saturday, October 8, while
Genesys Wealth Advisers Team's Nathan Haas retained his overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The ninth stage, with a distance of 75.4 kilometres, started in Burnie and finished in West Mooreville. The 32-years-old Russian professional road cyclist set the fastest time, 1 hour, 57 minutes and 28 seconds to reach his destination.
Joseph Lewis of Bikebug.Com was in good form until the finish but in the final 250 metres his chain slipped, landing him in the runner’s-up spot, as Markov took the lead. Earlier on, Markov easily sprinted out seven riders to take the first place.
At 57 kilometres to go, Nathan Haas superceded Joshua Atkins and Mark Jamieson and grabbed the lead among the trio. Nathan Earle, meanwhile, rushed ahead and beat Khatuntsev in the final sprint, leaving behind Ben Dyball (Jayco-AIS) who also earned the title
of most aggressive rider.
Aaron Donnelly (Jayco - AIS) also displayed excellent ability but secured eighth place with the difference of 2 seconds behind Alexander Khatuntsev (Team Russia).
Haas held on to his overall standing with a timing of 12 hours, 22 minutes and 10 seconds for
Genesys Wealth Advisers Team, with Joshua Atkins in second place, 12 seconds shy of Haas.
Cameron Peterson finished third with a difference of 14 seconds ahead of Parker.
The tenth stage will take place around Devonport on October 9 and will cover a distance of 51.6 kilometres.
