Alexis Thompson not seeking Ladies Professional Golf Association membership – Golf news
16-year-old golfer Alexis Thompson, who participated in the recent Avnet LPGA Classic, will not be seeking membership of the Ladies Professional Golf Association.
Even though she had a disappointing end to the tournament, she gave a decent performance in the event. The 16-year-old, who was leading the third round, posted a 6-over par in the final round to finish nine shots behind the winner, Maria Hjorth.
The player has to be at least 18 years of age to become a member of the LPGA Tour. Bobby Kreusler of Blue Giraffe Sports, talking about Thompson said that they have no plans for the LPGA as of now. In 2010, Lexi Thompson petitioned the Tour for additional
sponsor’s exemptions. Tour commissioner Mike Whan did not agree at first but opened up Monday qualifiers to all professional golfers.
Without really having to play for the LPGA, the talented golfer is busy on her own. She is scheduled to play the Ladies German Open later in May, ShopRite LPGA Classic, Wegmans LPGA Championship, US Women’s Open, Evian Masters and Safeway Classic. The young
player will also aim for the Women’s British Open in July.
The player started off the tournament really well as she made four birdies and three bogeys on her first day. The second round was average as well with two birdies and one bogey. In the third round, Thompson really surprised everyone by making six birdies
and one bogey. Finishing at seven under par, she almost became the youngest LPGA winner. The final round, however, did not go so well for the player as she made three birdies, one bogey and two double bogeys in it.
“It’s difficult for her to look right now at the good that came from the end of her finish,” Kreusler said. “She’s learning she’s not the first person to do this as a professional and she won’t be the last. It was a difficult lesson and not one she wanted
to learn or be taught. She doesn’t understand that she played great for three days and 13 holes. She only looks at the last [five].”
