Alfalfa balancer- whats the purpose?

my old trainer told me to get alfalfa balencer (mineral) for my horse.. whats the purpose of it?

Well if you feed your horse straight alfalfa it can cause many health problems because of all the protein it has in it. Alfalfa balancer can help give your horse all the other vitamins and minerals it needs to balance out (hence the name) the alfalfa (:

Good question!  Having fed alfalfaa for over 40 years, I'm guessing it's for horses who have absorptionon problems with the amount of protein that alfalfalfa produces.  I've known horses like that, it occassionally causes ulcers, loose stools etc.  You may try feeding some timothy hay as well.
