The Perth Scorchers have signed South Africa’s Twenty20 specialist Alfonso Thomas as their overseas player for this summer's Twenty20 Big Bash season.
Thomas, 35, replaces compatriot http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 (CSA) refused to grant him clearance to play.
The Cape Province right-arm medium pacer, who played for Adelaide Strikers in the inaugural edition of the Big Bash League (BBL), is regarded as one of the best Twenty20 players in the world.
While speaking to media reporters after signing the deal at WACA Ground, the South African seamer said that he had a great time with the Strikers last season, and hoped to have memorable time with the Scorchers this time around.
“I had a great time with the Strikers last year and it is such a tremendous tournament,” Thomas said. “The team has had a few injury withdrawals lately but any side with the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Bradley-Hogg-c59047 will always be very competitive and hopefully we can go one step further this summer,” he added further.
Scorchers' coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Justin-Lee-Langer-c69712 expressed delight over the signing, saying Thomas was a “brilliant” acquisition for the franchise.
“Alfonso is very experienced, bowls with good pace with both new and old ball, and is the best death bowler that I have seen in one-day cricket,” said Langer, who skippered Thomas during his stint as captain of Somerset.
“He is also an incredible person to have around a dressing room. He is going to be brilliant for the Scorchers,” the Scorchers’ coach added further.
The 35-year-old seamer also plays for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 at Johannesburg in February 2007.
The Scorchers will kick start their 2012-13 Big Bash League campaign against Thomas’ previous franchise Adelaide Strikers, at The Furnace on December 9. However, the South African seamer will be unavailable for Perth’s first two games.
