He was subsequently sent down to the reserve team as an auxiliary support to Alfredo Santaelena’s men. However, the 17-year-old could only muster 3 league appearances for Atletico Madrid B, and has been absent from the side for a couple of weeks.
With growing disturbances amongst the Atleti faithful, Santaelena took out time to address the situation, explaining the reasons behind the Caceres born player’s disappearance from his team’s fold.
Santaelena was full of praise for the Spanish U19 star, praising him for the promise he holds but believes he is not at an acceptable physical level to participate regularly, and was sent to train to gain ground on his first team rivals in Atletico Madrid
B team.
“He’s an excellent player, very good. Until recently though he was not at the acceptable physical level.”
Young Torres scored a goal on his comeback, with Alfredo hailing him for his performance. The coach praised Oliver for his contribution to the team effort, whilst also noting that he continues to improve.
Continuing on the topic, the reserve team manager explained that Torres was sent to improve on his physical fitness, dismissing suggestions that he was unable to cope up with his meteoric rise, stating that the midfield prodigy is mentally tough.
“I’m the first to be delighted that he is back though. He is a guy who has to keep growing as a player and he is one who will contribute a lot, but I have to defend all the players.”
“With Oliver the issue has been physical because mentally he is a strong kid who is willing to do things right. He is a player that will give us much joy at Atletico B and of course, then with the first team.”
“The aim of mine and the club is that all the kids are conditioned during this year for the first team.”
